Our great friend, Stephie, asked us last month to make her niece’s birthday cake. She wanted a chocolate caked with buttercream icing to feed 30. Theme: Unicorn
Ben and I started going over options for this cake from drawing a unicorn on top of a sheet cake, to sculpting the head of a unicorn, to sculpting a unicorn topper.
After much thought and research, we decided to go with a two tier cake with a fondant unicorn on top.
We baked two 8″ and two 6″ round cakes. After crumb coating the cake, we inserted the support dowels and stacked the two cakes. The bottom tier was decorated with a pink basket weave design. The top tier was white buttercream with Halle’s name piped on the front, accented with little pink fondant flowers. After adding pink and white borders to the tiers, we cut a round pink fondant base to set on top where the unicorn would be placed and added a few fondant flowers. Ben sculpted the unicorn from pink fondant, (again, I have the most amazing husband ever!) and I added white buttercream hair and black buttercream eyes. We added pink luster dust to the horn to add sparkle. After about five hours total, the unicorn cake was complete.
Halle, we hope you had the most amazing birthday ever! Thank you, Stephie, for such a fun cake!
